Day 7: Surprise, AZ – Superior, AZ

May 1st, 2009

Danny looked strong today.  So strong in fact, he is still biking!  And not just biking but biking up a mountain!  We started biking around 10:00 a.m. and within the first ten miles both Danny and Drew had a flat tire.  Cox FamilyWhile Ken was running to the post office to mail receipts to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Drew got his third flat tire of the trip.  Ken mailed the receipts and came to offer support.  Not more than a mile later, Danny got his first flat tire of the trip and Ken went to offer support as well.

While Danny and Drew were biking, Ken went to check out from the Hampton Inn we had stayed at last night.  He was greeted by the manager, Diane.  Thank you again Diane for everything you and your team did for us.  We loved our time with you and wished we could have stayed longer.

While at a gas station, Danny met two really neat people – Kelly and Tim Cox.  They talked at length about Danny’s story and Kelly and Tim’s experience with their faith.  Danny has a real knack for meeting the most interesting people.  It was amazing to hear their stories.bike fix

While driving the motor home, Ken ended up getting stuck in rush hour traffic and had to change four lanes in a 38′ motor home – twice!  When he finally made it through the traffic, he went ahead to check out Superior.  He drove the motor home up 5,500 feet  in elevation to let us know what to expect.  If there is anyone that we couldn’t lose, it is Ken. Without his hard work day and night, this trip would not be possible.  Thanks Ken.

While biking, two boys had a broken bicycle and they called to Danny.  Danny went over and spent twenty minutes with the boys fixing the bike.  When he went to leave, Danny gave the boys a set of bike tools so they too could fix the bike.  As Danny continued to bike, a woman stopped him.  It was Kelly Cox from the gas station just a couple miles down the street.  Her friend is going through a really difficult time and as a photographer, she wanted to take pictures of Danny biking to help tell his story.  What a great idea!  We are going to schedule a time in the morning to get together with Kelly.Kelly

We ended with dinner at Jack in the Box twenty-five miles and one mountain shy of where we wanted to end.  Danny, feeling stronger than ever, decided to keep biking.  Right now, he is climbing the mountain and will bike back down when he finishes.  Keep going Danny!
